GLB Trip Report March 2-10 2006

We’re both self employed and in our mid forties. We had been to the Caribbean Reef Club about 3 years ago but nothing C/O since then. When we travel we tend to stay in the nicer resorts and had been in Las Vegas 3 weeks earlier and stayed at Bellagio. Our expectations were fairly high. For those of you who don’t want to wade thru our trip report, here’s the bottom line….our expectations were met, we loved it and we will be going back…soon. If you’re on the fence…get off and go. I don’t know how much simpler I can say it! For those of you who would like more details, here they are.

We left Portland for Atlanta at 1130 PM on Wednesday night. The flight was uneventful and after a 3 hour layover we left for Montego Bay. Despite leaving almost 50 minutes late we arrived on time. After about 1.5 hours to clear customs, immigration and collect our luggage we arrived at the Superclubs lounge just in time for the shuttle to the resort. The ride was…a bit scary. I think the only thing that keeps more people from getting killed by the crazy drivers is the horrible condition of the roads. In many areas you just don’t get going fast enough to achieve lethal velocity. I would NOT recommend renting a car!! Also, did I mention that they drive on the left side of the road? On our last full day there we met the GM, Ron, who was just back to work after a 2 week convalescence. Seems he was driving home, at night, and came around a corner to find a dump truck parked sideways in the road!!!

The street party on Friday was moved inside Victoria Market due to rain. When they were moving it the rain was very light and we thought not worth the trouble to move. After we were inside the sky opened for about 45 minutes and left 1"-2" of standing water so I guess they were right to move it! They DID have lobster in the buffet but you could only get 2 pieces at a time and it was pretty mushy. The lines were very long but all in all we thought they did a very good job of salvaging the situation.

We had planned to go to the pajama party and the toga party but never made it to either one. We’re both early risers and after a long day at the pool, a nice dinner and a few drinks we were either asleep, otherwise engaged or just plan too tired to get up and walk back down to the disco. I really wish they would consider starting those activities at around 9:00 PM!

We had a beachfront ground floor room was on the "prude" side as the A/N side was fully booked with a lifestyles group. It was as far away from the A/N pool as it could be but the walk wasn’t that bad. The room was nice…plenty of hot water, good AC unit, electronic safe and a stocked refrigerator. We were also only a few steps away from the beach bar and hot tub, so it worked out just fine.

We spent most of our time at the A/N pool. There has been much discussion on the boards about C/O vs. A/N and what rules were being enforced. When we checked in we got the standard letter stating that the A/N facilities were for nude use only. We walked thru the resort in shorts and cover ups and never had anyone say a word to us about not being nude when were getting towels or setting up our stuff. Nor did they say anything to Mary about her see thru "cover ups" or bikini tops on the "prude" side. During the week it was common to see women on the A/N side wearing bikini bottoms some, or all, of the time and lots of people wore t-shirts, against the sun in the PM volleyball games. Many women covered themselves with a towel or wrap when going to the restroom or bar. At NO TIME did we see any guest or staff member confront a guest about not being nude or ask them to leave.

The club has a no picture policy on the A/N side. Lots of guests, ourselves included, had cameras and took a few pics on the A/N side. As long as you were respectful of others and didn’t get them in the backgrounds of the pics nothing was said about it.

The food at the resort was just great! We ate at the Japanese and French restaurants once each, the Italian 4 times, Victoria Market 4 times, and the A/N clubhouse 4 times and the rest of the time had room service. You really must go the Munasan. They do have Sushi if you like it, we don’t, but they also have cooked food and the show is worth the trip! You have to have reservations but you do NOT have to wear long pants or a jacket. I can’t say that we had a bad meal while we were there.

Mary wore skimpy bikini tops, or a slightly see thru tops, with a cover up over her hips going to and from the pool and at lunch. At dinner she wore very low cut dresses or tops and short skirts. She was almost never had the most risqué outfits at the restaurants. At no time did we see anyone asked to leave or change their clothing.

The staff was simply wonderful. They were very attentive and liked to discuss their country. At no time did we encounter and staff member that was the slightest bit rude and they were always eager to help.

The "prude" side beaches and pools were nearly empty, most of the time. All the activity seemed to be at the A/N beach, pool and hot tubs. The small hot tub, adjacent to the volleyball area on the A/N pool, was up and running and the temperature was just fine every time we were in it, or any of the others.

The weather was in the 80’s the whole time we were there. The wind blew pretty good most of the time and that kept the humidity down. Bugs were just not an issue. When we were in Mexico as long as the wind blew you were OK but the moment it let up you got eaten alive. I don’t know that I saw a mosquito in Jamaica, even at night around the street lights there were almost no insects.

There were a lot of cats on the grounds. Some were very skittish, as you would expect, and others were very friendly and would let you pet them. None were aggressive. I think lots of guests feed them, I know we did, and the staff seems to ignore them unless somebody complains about them trying to mooch food.

Bottom line, again, we loved it and will be going back again this year.
